Many say that Blackpool is a fun town to visit, but even a better place to stay. Find out why!

Radiology is an increasingly competitive and demanding subspecialty. We pride ourselves in having a diverse and interesting group of registrars. We are a small radiology department with more than 200,000 exams performed and interpreted each year. We have over 15 consultant radiologists on the teaching staff guiding the education of our registrars.

In our training programme, registrars spend time in each subspecialty area of radiology. Each registrar has access to his/her own PACS workstation, is able to have immediate hands-on experience and has a shared office with other registrars. The site has PACS and voice recognition software, ensuring that registrars are trained for the future, in a filmless, digital environment.

Here at Blackpool Victoria Hospital, we see quite a diversity of patients with a large variety of pathology. There is a weekly meeting with a consultant to discuss interesting cases, spanning all modalities. Personal discussions to determine strengths and weaknesses with tutors are also routine.

We never lose sight of the necessity for our registrars’ personal well-being while striving to attain excellence in medical training. Our registrars receive regular individualized feedback as well as the opportunity to give input during faculty advising sessions.

In our programme, registrars learn from and work with knowledgeable, friendly, and above all, approachable consultants. Whether discussing a clinical dilemma, obtaining advice on career planning or just sharing a friendly chat, our staff shows its support for registrar education and development in innumerable ways.

All other considerations aside, the collegiate atmosphere at Blackpool Victoria Hospital is what sets our radiology programme apart from others. Each registrar’s views are heard and considered in the decision making that shapes the programme and as a result, provides our registrars with an ownership share and a sense of pride in its on-going success.

Our registrars leave with the confidence and understanding that they have the ability to manage a wide array of imaging concerns and a deep appreciation of the technology that influences all aspects of medicine.
